Cabin entertainment without a Supplemental Type Certificate.

The question operators ask first is almost never about picture quality. It is whether the upgrade drags them into a certification programme. For the CSS-100 the answer is that it does not, and the reason is classification rather than a shortcut.

The usual route

What an installed upgrade commits you to.

Anything wired into the aircraft changes the aircraft. That is the whole difficulty. A cabin system that draws ship power, occupies a rack, or connects to existing avionics is a modification to a type-certificated product, and modifications need approval.

In practice that means an engineering package, an approval path such as a Supplemental Type Certificate, updated documentation and weight-and-balance, and shop time with the aircraft out of service. Each of those is a cost, but the one operators feel most is the last: an aircraft in a hangar is an aircraft not earning.

None of this is unreasonable. It is the correct process for equipment that genuinely alters the aircraft. The question worth asking is whether cabin entertainment needs to alter the aircraft at all.

The classification

What “loose equipment” means.

The CSS-100 is loose equipment. Nothing is wired to the airframe, nothing is fastened to structure, and nothing is connected to the aircraft’s systems. It is a self-contained unit roughly the size of a hardback book — five by six by three inches, about two pounds — that is carried aboard, stowed, powered up and used.

Because it does not modify the aircraft, there is no aircraft-specific installation to engineer and no per-type approval to obtain. That is why the same unit works across a Global, a Challenger, a Falcon, a Gulfstream, a Legacy or a Citation without a different programme for each. There is no installation to be type-specific about.

  • No STC required for use.
  • No wiring, no rack, no structural attachment.
  • No aircraft downtime and no shop visit.
  • No change to the certified cabin installation already fitted.

Radio compliance

Airworthiness approval and RF compliance are different things.

These get conflated, so it is worth separating them. Airworthiness approval concerns whether the aircraft has been modified. Radio-frequency compliance concerns whether a device emits within permitted limits. They are governed by different rules and different authorities.

The CSS-100 is compliant with FCC Part 15B. It operates alongside the cabin systems already fitted — CES, Collins Venue, Lufthansa Technik nice, Honeywell Ovation and others — rather than competing with them for the same function or the same spectrum role.

Classification settles the certification question. It does not settle every question, and we would rather say so plainly than let it come as a surprise later.

Carriage and use of portable electronic equipment in the cabin remains governed by your own operating rules and procedures. Operators under a commercial certificate typically have policy covering portable equipment, stowage during critical phases of flight, and crew briefing. Those procedures are yours, they vary by regulator and by operation, and they are worth confirming against your own operations manual before the unit flies.

What the classification removes is the engineering and approval programme. What it does not remove is your normal operational governance — and no supplier should tell you otherwise.
