When the map stops being the thing passengers want to look at.
Cabin moving maps age badly. The airframe has decades of life left, the seats get refreshed, the finish gets refreshed — and the map on the bulkhead still renders the way it did when the aircraft was delivered, because the system driving it stopped being developed years ago.
The problem
An installed map ages on the installation’s timeline, not the aircraft’s.
Three things tend to happen together. The graphics start to look their age against a phone screen the passenger is already holding. Chart and terrain data stop being refreshed because the product has aged out of active support. And the display itself is fixed where it was installed, which is rarely where everyone is sitting.
Meanwhile the passenger has a device in their hand with a far better screen than the bulkhead monitor, and no way to get the flight onto it.
The disproportionate fix
Replacing the cabin system to fix the map.
The conventional answer is to replace or upgrade the installed cabin management system. For an aircraft that otherwise works perfectly well, that is a large intervention to solve one visible symptom: engineering, approval, documentation, and the aircraft out of service while it happens.
It is the right answer when the cabin system has genuinely reached the end of its life. It is a heavy answer when the cabin system is fine and only the map has dated.
The lighter route
Add a map layer instead of replacing a system.

Where this comes up
Mostly on aircraft that are otherwise in good shape.
This question tends to arrive from operators of earlier Globals and Challengers, Falcon 900 and 2000 series aircraft, and GIV and GV generation Gulfstreams — airframes with plenty of service life whose cabin electronics predate the smartphone era. The aircraft is not the problem. The vintage of one subsystem is.
Because the unit is loose equipment, seeing whether it solves your problem does not require committing to anything structural. No STC is required for use, and the aircraft never leaves service to find out.
