Portable vs. installed IFE: STC, cost and downtime compared.

If your cabin entertainment is dated, you have two routes. One involves a completion centre, a certification path and weeks off the line. The other involves carrying a two-pound box aboard. Here is the honest difference between them.

What "installed" actually commits you to

An installed cabin entertainment upgrade is an alteration to the aircraft. Equipment is mounted, wired, bonded and powered from ship's systems, which means it has to be shown to be airworthy in that configuration. In practice that usually means a major alteration approved under an STC or by an authorised engineering representative, plus weight and balance revisions, updated cabin placarding, and revised maintenance documentation.

None of that is unreasonable — it exists because anything permanently attached to an aircraft has to behave predictably in flight. But it has three consequences operators feel directly:

  • Cost is not just hardware. A meaningful share of the bill is engineering, approval and labour rather than the equipment itself.
  • Downtime is real. The aircraft has to be in a shop, not on the schedule.
  • The approval is type-specific. What is approved on one airframe does not automatically transfer to another tail in the fleet.

What "loose equipment" means

Loose equipment is carried aboard and stowed, not installed. It is not attached to the aircraft structure, it does not draw from ship's power circuits as installed equipment does, and it is not part of the type design. Passenger electronics, portable oxygen, and cabin service items all sit in this category.

The CSS-100 is classified as loose equipment. Because of that, no cabin certification is required for its use. There is no STC to purchase, no major alteration to sign off, and no weight and balance revision to file for a two-pound object in a seat pocket.

It is FCC Part 15B compliant, which covers the radio-frequency emissions side of operating an electronic device — the same regulatory basis under which portable electronic devices are used in cabins generally.

When installed is still the right answer

We would rather be straight about this than oversell. An installed system is the better choice when you need permanently mounted bulkhead or seatback monitors, when the entertainment system has to be integrated into a wider cabin management architecture at the certification level, or when you are already doing a full interior refurbishment and the marginal cost of doing it properly is low.

Portable makes more sense when the aircraft is out of production support and a fixed upgrade is hard to justify, when the airframe is on a lease or heading for sale, when you run several tails and want one solution across them, or when you simply cannot spare the downtime.

The gap portable used to have

The old objection to portable systems was that they were a compromise: a smaller map, a thinner media library, a clumsier experience. That gap is what the CSS-100 was built to close. It runs an interactive live 3D moving map with worldwide coverage, a 3D model matched to your actual aircraft, customised points of interest, your own branding, on-demand audio and video, and an optional audio and video safety briefing — all delivered to the passenger's own device rather than a fixed screen.

It also works alongside the cabin systems already fitted, including CES, Venue, nice and Honeywell Ovation, so adopting it does not mean abandoning what you have. And since the current version runs in the browser, passengers reach it by scanning a QR code rather than installing anything — which removes the objection portable systems used to attract.

What to check before you decide

  • Ask what your current cabin system's map data update path is, and whether it is still supported.
  • Get the downtime estimate for a fixed upgrade in writing, not just the hardware quote.
  • Confirm whether an approval would cover one tail or your whole fleet.
  • Ask to see any portable option running in a cabin before committing — a demo tells you more than a spec sheet.
